Ratings & Grades

Most bridge sessions played at our club earn Masterpoints. At the end of the year, each member is given a Rating and a Grade based on their Masterpoints.

Masterpoints

C points are awarded at club and tournament level for players who finish in the top third of the field (e.g. winners of each section receive 40 C Points). Every 100 'C' Points you earn are converted to 1 'B' Point, but B' Points cannot be coverted to 'A' Points. You have to earn these by being awarded a top place at an approved tournament. Masters who have not attained sufficient 'A' Points to move to a higher level will receive Stars. You can track your Masterpoints on the NZBridge website by clicking on the link: Masterpoints online

There are 12 ranks based on your Masterpoints, and 4 grades.

Rating Points

Rating points are a calculation used by NZ Bridge to determine a player's national grade (e.g. Junior, Intermediate, Open) for a given year. Rating points are calculated at the end of the year by taking the previous year's rating, depreciating it by 20%, and then adding the sum of the A and B masterpoints earned during the year. This helps to create a system where a player's grade reflects their current level of experience, with a chance to move up or down based on recent performance.
